This year would have been the 36th running of the Sugarbush Adventure Games, that end-of-winter zany race involving running, paddling, cycling, and (often) Nordic skiing. The 2012 edition, renamed the Mad Triathlon, revamped the event and we continue on that theme in 2013.
Sugarbush partnered with the creator of the Mad Marathon to move the games to May, reconfigure the course to marathon distance, and refocus the activities to those of a more traditional triathlon (though the Mad Tri will still have four legs instead of three).

The 2013 event features:
The Mad Triathlon begins
at 9:00 AM on Saturday, May 11th at Sugarbush’s Lincoln Peak
base
area. The Mad Tri will start and end
at Lincoln Peak, and will feature its
traditional four legs of racing
excitement: Competitors will road
run 7.2 miles, paddle 6 miles, pedal
10 miles, and end with an on-mountain
3-mile trail run. The 26.2
mile
course
weaves its way through
the
towns of
Warren, Waitsfield and
Fayston.
Team relays, and ‘iron’ men and women are invited to compete in the Mad Triathlon. A Kids Triathlon will be held the same day, featuring a Mad River Valley School Challenge.
Clearwater Sports in Waitsfield is offering a Paddling Race Clinic for the MAD TRI participants on Friday, May 10th from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. All participants will meet at Clearwater Sports at 10:00 AM. The river running and safety clinics will feature dry-land discussions and then a paddle down the MAD Triathlon race course.
The kayak and canoe clinics will include instruction in paddle strokes, boat control and safety techniques. Attention will be focused on the concept of reading the river and finding the best channels to run. All levels are welcome to attend. This is a great way to get to know the river and increase comfort before race day.
Clearwater Sports will provide free shuttle service with any boat rental on the day of the race. PFD rentals are also available. Advanced reservations are required. Call Clearwater Sports at 802-496-2708 to make reservations.
